The main road through the Yaghnob Valley currently (as of 2024) goes from Margheb (the final village before you go through the gorge into the valley proper) [39.1777531N, 68.9019964E] through to Piskon [39.1768281N, 69.1627358E] in the Upper District of the Yaghnob Valley. All in all this is a distance of about 35km (~22 miles).
The road is open to drive from early summer (often from early-June) through to early winter (sometimes as late as mid-January). It is maintained by the community and each year is cleared of avalanche debris and then often repaired and rerouted where necessary. It is possible to contribute to this annual effort through our Mountain Community Relief Fund – do get in touch.
The road is a simple single track and in most places it is not possible for vehicles to pass one another. On any given day of hiking along the road you would be unlikely to meet more than a handful of cars making their way in or out of the valley. This makes walking the road a generally very enjoyable experience – not marred by vehicles kicking up dust or crowding you out.
During the spring, before the road has been opened to vehicles, it’s possible to hike into the Yaghnob Valley, but this will require you to be prepared to cross avalanche terrain, which can be several hundred meters of ankle-turning lumps of snow and ice.
